Where to go for help and support with a wide range of mental health issues.
One in four adults and one in 10 children experience mental illness, and many more of us know, and care for, people who do.
If you are in crisis and in need of immediate mental health support call NHS 111 option 2 or Samaritans on 116 123, text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258 or go to your nearest A&E department.
Anxiety UK
Anxiety UK is a national registered charity formed in 1970, by someone living with agoraphobia, for those affected by anxiety, stress and anxiety-based depression. Telephone 03444 775 774 – 09:30–17:30 Monday–Friday. You can also book a call with an experienced Anxiety UK adviser.
Bipolar Support Line
Provides information and advice for people affected by bipolar disorder and those who care for them. Telephone 0333 323 3880 – calls are no more than national rate calls to standard UK landline phone numbers (Monday–Friday 9 am–5 pm).
Mental Health and Money Advice
Clear, practical advice and support for people experiencing issues with mental health and money. The website is run by Mental Health UK. This is an online service.
Mind
When you’re living with a mental health problem, or supporting someone who is, having access to the right information is vital – Mind provides information on a wide range of issues and can help you to find local support.
No Panic
A national support helpline for people experiencing anxiety, panic, OCD and related disorders including withdrawal from tranquillizers. No Panic also provides support for the carers of people who suffer from anxiety disorders. Telephone 0300 772 9844, 10.00 am–10.00 pm every day of the year. During the night hours the crisis message is played. The crisis message is a recorded breathing exercise that can help you through a panic attack and help you learn diaphragmatic breathing.
Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide (under 35)
Papyrus offers confidential support and suicide intervention, delivers awareness and prevention training and empowers young people to lead suicide-prevention activities in their communities. Telephone 0800 068 4141 or text 07860 039967. Both freephone (9 am–12 am every day).
Rethink Mental Health
Rethink Mental Health works to transform the lives of everyone severely affected by mental illness, and how our nation approaches mental illness. They provide over 90 services, 120 local support groups, and run campaigns that bring about real change. Rethink also offers fast support for those who need to get help now.
Samaritans
Whatever you’re going through, a Samaritan will face it with you. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 116 123 free, anytime. Contact by email at jo@samaritans.org (response may take some time.)
SANEline
SANE is a leading UK charity providing emotional support and information to anyone affected by mental illness. SANEline is open between 4 pm to 10 pm, 365 days a year. Call 0300 304 7000. You can also get support by text, however this can take some time – at least 72 hours.
